  1. I love Matts reviews but he”s pretty spoiled. I”ve found it near impossible to find such a complete driving package as the 996 offers for the money. The e46 M3 is a great car, but is not nearly as communicative and complex of a driving experience as the 996. Departing from the fine tuned and perfected air cooled 911 was never going to be an easy task. The 996 was a leap into somewhat uncharted territory for Porsche, the first of its kind. I wouldn”t call it quirky, but I believe it stands alone as a very important part of Porsche history. It”s the little things like the petite wiper and turn signal stalks and the separate knob for fine tuning the intermittent wipers that reminisce the earlier cars. Sure the electronic throttle and handling aren”t as perfected as on the later cars, but that keeps its feeling a more raw and visceral. The 996 headlights also get better looking everyday and will always be a staple in Porsche history as the only 911 without circular lights.
